Emily Kay Chance Jordan
Graveside services for Emily Kay Chance Jordan were held May 7, 2024, at Hepzibah Cemetery, with Rev. Don McClellan officiating. Mrs. Jordan, 82, entered the eternal rest of her Lord May 5 at Merit Health-Wesley Medical Center. Saulters Moore Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
Kay was born on Sept. 19, 1941, in Jackson to Ernest and Minnie Etta Thurman Mullins. She grew up in the Pinola area and attended school at Pinola High and then William Carey, where she graduated with an elementary education degree.
She was a teacher at Moss Point School District, where she met and fell in love with Ralph Chance. The two were married in August of 1964. They moved back to the Lawrence County area in 1969 with their two young boys, where she would spend the remainder of her 25-plus years of teaching. Kay had a love for learning, and she passed that love on to her students.
Kay loved animals, especially birds, and would spend hours watching them. She had a collection of figurines all over her home of birds. If there was ever a question of what to get her for a gift, you couldn’t go wrong with anything with a bird.
Kay was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for many years. She loved each and every member of her class and if you were out, she would be on the phone finding out why. She loved the Lord with all her heart and loved to sing praises to Him. Many times, you could hear her singing songs of praise or reading her Bible. She was always thirsty for more knowledge of what she could learn from reading His Word.
Mrs. Jordan is preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Ralph Chance, and her second husband, Jamie Jordan, along with several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her sons, Rev. Derek Chance (Vicky), of Silver Creek; Grayson Chance, of Foley, Ala.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Beulah Ann Hall, of Lake, and Betty Ruth Mullins, of Silver Creek.
