  • Mississippi Watermelon Festival

    The 2019 Mississippi Watermelon Festival is currently accepting applications for arts and craft vendors for July 19 & 20. In its 41st year, the Festival is held in Mize in the City Park with an average attendance of 6,000. The Festival features a 5K run, Car and Truck Show, Biggest Watermelon Contest, and entertainment throughout both days, as well as the arts and crafts. Organizers are also looking for talented artists to perform, so please email your information if you are interested. Space is limited so get your applications in. They will meet at the Summit Pool Hall in Summit at 11 a.m. and will begin at 11:45 a.m. The benefit is open to the public.     Holly Springs Baptist Church is having revival services July 21-24. Rev. Paul Smith of Life Church and formerly of Bethel Baptist in Monticello will bring the message. Rev. Terry Wallace of Oak Grove Baptist Church will lead music.
    Sunday service starts at 11 a.m. with dinner on the grounds to follow and an afternoon service following lunch.
    Services start at 7 nightly, Monday through Wednesday. All are invited. The church is located at 163 Holly Springs Rd., Foxworth. Dave Nichols is pastor.

  • Pesticide Applicator Certification Training Class

    The Mississippi State University Extension– Lawrence County office will have a private Pesticide Applicator Certification Training class on Tuesday, July 23, at 12:00 p.m. at the Lawrence County office (214 Main Street, Suite C, Monticello, MS 39654). A $20 fee per participant is collected on the day of the training. R.S.V.P. by calling 601-587-2271 by July 18th to reserve a seat. By completing this training and obtaining a score of 70% or better will certify you to purchase restricted use pesticides for a five (5) year period. The private applicator training is mandatory for producers who must be certified to purchase and use restricted use products which are defined as pesticides that could cause harm to humans or to the environment unless it is applied by a certified applicator who has the knowledge to use these pesticides safely and effectively.
    Mississippi State University Extension provides educational opportunities to the public on an equal opportunity basis and will make every reasonable effort to accommodate individuals with disabilities. If you have a disability which would interfere with your opportunity to participate in this program contact the Extension office within seven (7) days before the date of the program. If you plan to attend this program and would like a manual, “Applying Pesticides Correctly,” to assist you in preparing for the test portion of the training, please come by the Lawrence County Extension office.   • Oma Flea Market Extravaganza
