Monticello aldermen hear mobile home park expansion request
The monthly meeting of the Monticello Mayor and Board of Aldermen opened with a request from a mobile home park owner to allow additional units on his property.
Gordon Shipp bought the mobile home park at 304 Jefferson St. about a year ago and has cleaned it up, improved maintenance, and replaced many of the units with travel trailers. The campers fill a niche for lower income residents who do not have transportation, Shipp said. The property is located near downtown, and residents can walk to get food and other needs.
Shipp said because the park is nice and well-maintained, he has a waiting list and would like to add units. Currently, town zoning prohibits additional units, and there is no easy way for the board to grant the request, according to town attorney John Sutton. Creating non-conforming zoning would create problems for the town, Sutton said.
