Amos Newman Jr.

Amos Newman Jr., 94, of Tylertown, died May 18, 2023, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was born Feb. 10, 1929, in Monticello to Amos and Golda Wooley Newman where he spent his earlier years in life.
After graduating from Lawrence County High School in 1946, he enrolled in Alcorn A&M College. However, while attending Alcorn he was drafted in 1947 to serve in the U.S. Army as a field/combat medic during the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Alcorn to complete his training in higher education. He received his B.S. in education from Alcorn State University in 1955. He later attended Indiana University and received his M.S. in education administration in 1959. He proudly received his golden diploma from Alcorn State University in May of 2005.
He was well-known in Tylertown, serving within the community in several different capacities. He started his career in education as a math teacher, girls basketball coach, and finally, a longtime principal at Tylertown Elementary School. Upon his retirement in 2001, he had served a total of 40 years within the Walthall County Association of Public Schools. He was also just as well-known in his hometown of Monticello, where he was a longtime business owner and faithfully served as a deacon at Monticello First Baptist Church.
He was a member of Monticello First Baptist Church, past president of the Walthall County Alcorn State University Alumni Association, Walthall County Teachers Association, Walthall County Cattlemen Association, and the Lawrence County Forestry Association.
He loved being with his family and being outside amongst his cattle, driving his tractors, and working on his family farms in both Monticello and Tylertown.
Amos Newman Jr. is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Phillips Newman; three sons, Amos Newman III, Antonio Newman Sr. (Felicia), and Dr. Anthony David Newman (Letitia); one granddaughter, three grandsons, and three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service was held May 27 at New Life Fellowship Baptist Church in Monticello. Burial service was held at Monticello First Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alcorn State University Foundation Inc. (1000 ASU Drive #810, Lorman, MS 39096-7500) in honor of Amos Newman Jr.
