Annual market animal sale set for Jan. 10
The Lawrence County Livestock Show Association will hold its annual market animal sale fundraiser on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at the James E. Givens Agri-Building on F.E. Sellers Highway in Monticello. Activities will begin at 5 p.m. with a buyer/exhibitor dinner, and the sale will begin at 7 p.m.
The sale serves as a positive reward for the 4-H and FFA exhibitors who work diligently throughout the year to care for, feed, and show the animals.
The 2023 sale will feature three hogs, which will be presented by the 4-HIFFA exhibitor. This sale is an auction, with the animal being sold to the highest bidder. Exhibitors are responsible for delivering the animal to the processor of the buyer’s choice. The buyer is responsible for making processing arrangements and paying processing fees.
Buyers may purchase animals for support. Support basis will pay the difference between the bid price and the current market price, and the exhibitor will retain the animal. For this purpose, market rates for all species will be announced prior to the sale.
Animals are sold with the stipulation that they will be competing in the Dixie National Jr. Round-Up. If any animal makes the “Sale of Champions” at the Dixie National, then the buyer will not receive the animal and will not be responsible for any payments. Buyers are encouraged to send their local winning bids to Jackson to set the floor price on the animal.
Volunteers also donate delicious homemade cakes to be auctioned as part of the fundraiser. Cake sales fund livestock activities throughout the year.
Anyone who is not able to participate in this year’s sale and would like to make a donation to the association may do so by mailing a check payable to Lawrence County Livestock Show Association, 214 Main Street, Suite C, Monticello, MS 39654. Donations are greatly appreciated and used to support the 4-H and FFA livestock club activities.
