Guy Leary Odom Jr.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, 2021, at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Bassfield for Dr. Guy Leary Odom Jr., 83, of Bassfield, who passed away June 4 at his residence. Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia is handling arrangements.
Dr. Guy Odom Jr. was a 1956 graduate of McCallie Military Academy in Chattanooga, Tenn. In 1960, he received his BS in chemistry at Duke University in Durham, N.C. In 1965, he graduated Duke University’s School of Medicine. In 1971, he served his residency in the Department of Surgery at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La., and served a residency at the VA Hospital in New Orleans, La. Following his retirement in 2001, Dr. Odom remained active in community events. He became a master gardener in 2005 and constantly was involved in community projects through the Master Gardener Program.
Dr. Guy Odom Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Guy Odom Sr.; mother, Suzanne Odom; and sisters, Linda Odom Cook and Carolyn Odom Little.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marcia Odom, of Monticello; sons, Dr. Guy L. Odom III, of Seattle, Wash.; Dr. Geoffery L. Odom (Karla), of Mobile, Ala.; daughters, Amber F. Harvey (Christopher), of Bassfield; Meghann C. Sheppeard, of Meridian; Kristen K. Lambert (Jason), of Monticello; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; sister-in-law, Janet Wirt, of Bassfield; two nieces; and five nephews.
