James Leon “Toby” Johnson

James Leon “Toby” Johnson, 82, of Monticello, passed away on Nov. 10, 2020, at his residence. A funeral service was held Nov. 12 at Bethel Baptist Church in Monticello, with graveside services following in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Michael Smith, Bro. Archie Herrin, and Bro. Philip Alford officiated, with Wilson Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Toby was born July 31, 1938, in Batesville, to James Leon II and Hattie Davis Johnson. He retired as a senior tool pusher in the oil field industry. He served in the Mississippi Army National Guard for six years as a cook. He was an avid fisherman and former member of the Brookhaven Bass Club. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Toby enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Toby will be missed by everyone.
Those preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Darlene Johnson; stepfather, Dewitt Evans; sister, Omelia Tyson; and daughter-in-law, Melissa Johnson.
Toby is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann Johnson, of Monticello; son, Tim Johnson, of Monticello; daughter, Janan Johnson Malone, of Brookhaven; brothers, Paul Johnson (Debra), of Silver Creek; and Douglas Johnson (Charlotte), of Monticello; sister, Martha Lou Ballard, of Monticello; grandchildren, Jessica Channell, Ford Johnson, of Monticello; and Matthew Malone, of Brookhaven; great-grandchildren, Fisher Channell and Asher Channell.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
