Jean S. McElroy

Born Sallie Eugenia Story on Jan. 18, 1934, in Tuskegee, Ala., most folks around Monticello knew her simply as Jean. She married Harold McElroy in March of 1954, and they were inseparable for 64 years. They did everything together. Mom had battled dementia for nearly 10 years. She fought the good fight but on Aug. 6, 2020, the Lord called her home. Mom had a servant heart, just like her mother before her. She taught us the importance of taking a meal to someone who had been sick or in the hospital. Mom loved spending time with friends and family. She had a welcoming smile, a contagious laugh, and never met a stranger.
The family would like to thank the administration and staff at Lawrence County Nursing Center for their care of Mom over these past two years. We would also like to thank the emergency room staff and Dr. Patrick Wood and the COVID unit staff at Lawrence County Hospital for their care during Mom’s last days.
Mom is survived by two sons, Wayne (Debbie) McElroy, of Zachary, La.; Brian McElroy, of Monticello; daughter-in-law, Gay McElroy, of Monticello; grandchildren, Douglas (Jennifer) McElroy, of Zachary, La.; Randy (Ellen) McElroy, of Houston, Texas; Patrick McElroy, of Pensacola, Fla.; Morgan McElroy, of Monticello; and Patricia McElroy, of Pensacola, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Megan Hart, Jordan Westbrook, and Jackson McElroy, of Zachary, La.; Sawyer and Sadie McElroy, of Houston, Texas; siblings, Dr. Bob Story and Annie Lee Cole, both of Tuskegee, Ala.
