Elder David Lee Baker Sr.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 28, 2020, at Christ Temple Church of Christ, Oakvale, for Elder David Lee Baker Sr., 86, who died Friday, March 20, 2020, at Jefferson Davis Community Hospital, Prentiss,. Elder Maxie Lowe officiated with interment following in the church cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Elder David Baker was born to the late Lymon and Charity Baker, in Oakvale. He attended Jordan Hill and married Miss Dixie Lee James in 1950. Elder Baker became a logger and a successful business owner of D&DB Logging Company, which he and his wife built. He employed many skilled workers in the community throughout the years.
Elder Baker was rooted in Christianity and was called a minister at the age of 24. As a minister, he served as a leader and counselor in the community. He was awarded the Proclamation of Longevity and Service Certificate from Mayor Henry C. Banks of the City of Hazlehurst in 2010 for his 50 plus years of services as minister. Elder Baker was also awarded a certificate of recognition from the United States House of Representatives, District 76, for his Christian servanthood in 2011.
He was preceded in death by four sons, Lash Larue Baker, Larry Lavern Baker, Moses Baker, and Timothy Baker; and one grandson, Joel Crane.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie L. Baker, of Oakvale; two brothers, Lymon Baker Jr., of Miami, Fla., and Louis Baker, of Oakvale; three sons, David Lee (Shirley) Baker, Lymon L. Baker, Micheal L. Baker, all of Oakvale; eight daughters, Margorie T. (Rick) Harper, of Oakvale; Karen Y. Baker, of Radcliff, Ky.; Annette Baker, of Rochester, N.Y.; Sandra (Victor) Tyler, of Gulfport; Sheekela (Mark) Yeboah, of Bethesda, Md.; Michelle L. (J. D.) Carr, of Woodbridge, Va.; Mesheba A. Johnson, of Gulfport; and many other relatives and friends.
