Ongoing Activities
Families First for Mississippi is currently conducting classes in Lawrence County. Parenting Classes are held from 10-11 a.m. on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Education Life Skills classes are held from 11 a.m.-Noon the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Job Readiness Workforce/Basic Workplace Essentials Classes are held from 1-2 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. The Abner W. Cooper Memorial Post 27 of the American Legion provides the Army/Marine Corps/Navy/Air Force Times newspapers in the Lawrence County Library. If you have served in the United States Armed Forces during any of the war eras (April 6, 1917-November 11, 1918; December 7, 1941-December 7, 1946; June 25, 1950-January 31, 1955; February 28, 1961-May 7, 1975; August 24, 1982-July 31, 1984; December 20, 1989-January 31, 1990; and, August 2, 1990 to present), and have been honorably discharged or are still serving– you are eligible for membership in The American Legion! There are three chartered posts in Lawrence County. If you are interested in becoming a Legion member, contact the Abner W. Cooper Memorial Post 27 through its Facebook page, “ACooper Post.”
Girl Scouts of Lawrence County is in need of adults who are willing to become leaders. Many girls want to join the organization, but troops cannot currently be formed due to a lack of leaders. If you are interested, contact local coordinator Sevetrius James at 601-303-9872.
Five County Community Transportation offers transportation services to the General Public and Senior Citizens Monday-Saturday 6 a.m.-8 p.m. For more information, contact 601-792-4196 or 1-800-670-7178.
The local chapter of Woodmen of the World meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Monticello Methodist Protestant Church on F.E. Sellers Highway.
The VFW and VFW Auxiliary Post 2618 invite all eligible individuals to supper at 5 and meetings at 5:30 on the second Tuesday of each month on Industrial Park Road.
The Lawrence County Museum, located in the Civic Center, is open from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday.
The Monticello Alcorn Alumni Chapter meets regularly on the Thursday after the 2nd Sunday of each month at the Monticello First Baptist Fellowship Hall at 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in attending or becoming a member can contact Walter Hill at 601-669-1647.
The H.U.G.S. Club of Lawrence County meets every first Thursday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at the Lawrence County Extension Service office. Its purpose is to strengthen families in our community and empower citizens to actively participate in better home life and to promote the effectiveness of volunteer action and support.
