Elzen P. King

Mr. Elzen P. King, 92, of Monticello, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019, at Lawrence County Nursing Center in Monticello. He was born November 2, 1927, in Monticello to Elish and Mary Maggie Ballard King.
The Funeral Service was held Monday, December 23, 2019, at New Zion Baptist Church, with graveside services following in the Church Cemetery. Bro. Jimmy Harvey and Johnny Calcote officiated the services, with Wilson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Elzen served in WWII in 1946 and was Honorable Discharged in 1947, receiving World War II Victory Medal. He was a sharecropper farmer and a master carpenter. He was among the first contractors for the ground breaking and building of the St.Regis/Georgia-Pacific Paper Mill in Monticello. It was hard to catch Mr. Elzen at home because of his love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and visiting with grandchildren and family. He was an active member of New Zion Baptist Church, and he loved his church family.
He is survived by his children, Carrol King and wife, Elsie, of Edwards, Brenda King of Monticello, Gerald King of Monticello, and Mary King Lea and husband, Joe, of Monticello; grandchildren, Andrew King, Holly Guthrie, Jenny Branton, Diane King and Mark Butler; thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers, Arthur King and Carl King, and one sister, Ruth Smith.
Those preceding him in death were his parents; wife of 62 years, Frances King Smith; son, Jerry King; two infant children; brothers, Clell King and Dewy King, and sisters, Tera Griffith and Lola Faye Douglas.
