Vera Celeste Ward

Mrs. Vera Celeste Ward, 88, of Silver Creek, was called home from this life on Saturday, August 17, 2019, at her residence in Silver Creek. Celeste was born July 23, 1931, to Isaac and Lessie Fortenberry.
Services were held Monday, August 19, 2019, at Wilson Funeral Home, with graveside services following in Old Arm Cemetery in Silver Creek. Bro. Charles Nail officiated the services, with Wilson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Zolon Ward; her parents, Isaac and Lessie Fortenberry; brother, Robert Ray Fortenberry, and sister, Frances Elizabeth Fortenberry.
After teaching and influencing students for more than 30 years, she retired from Lawrence County School District as Principal of Monticello Elementary School. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 50 years.
Celeste, known as Big Granny, was very loving, caring and supportive to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Celeste is survived by her daughter, Carmen, and husband, Steve Garrett; two grandchildren, Joshua Garrett and wife, Kail, and Will Garrett and wife, Amanda, and five great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Walker, Beau, Nolon and Emma Garrett.
