Samuel Slay, Jr.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 23, 2018 at New Life Fellowship Church in Monticello for Mr. Samuel Slay, Jr., 64, who died Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson. Rev. Amos Bridges, pastor, officiated with interment following in the church cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Samuel Slay, Jr. was born in Monticello to the late Vetta and Samuel Slay, Sr. He joined Pearl River Valley Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent; he later moved his membership to New Life Fellowship Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon. He received his education in Lawrence County School District.
He was married to Rosia Brent and to this union two children were born. He worked various jobs: McClain and Barnes, Joe Miles and later Lawrence County School District for over twenty-five years.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Isom Slay and Emanuel Slay.
He is survived by his wife, Rosia Slay of Monticello; one son, Joseph (Sharella) Slay of Silver Creek; one daughter, Kayla (Min. Gregory) Varnado of Monticello; four sisters, Wilma Johnson, Barbara (Theodore) Stewart, Betty (Ralph) Bridges and Ruby (Levester) Sutton, all of Monticello; three brothers, James (Diane) Slay of Vallejo, California, Gerald Slay of Monticello and Leveal (Marlania) Applewhite of Slidell, Louisiana; three grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
