Laura Louise Thomas

Graveside services were held on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Gasque Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pulaski for Laura Louise Thomas, 90, of Monticello, who passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Southwest Regional Medical Center in McComb.
Reverend Tommy Shields officiated the services, with interment following in the Gasque Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Billy M. King- Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins was in charge of the arrangements.
Miss Thomas was born on March 29, 1927 in Pulaski. She was the Valedictorian of her graduating class at Homewood High School. Miss Thomas attended Jones County Junior College and University of Southern Mississippi, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She later earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Tennessee. Miss Thomas taught English at numerous schools in the area, including the Laurel Public Schools, Pascagoula High School and Monticello Junior High School. She retired after thirty-four years of service as an English teacher. Miss Thomas was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Morris Thomas and Beulah Anderson Thomas and one sister, Iva Nell Thomas Fortenberry.
Survivors include her sister, Geneva Thomas Burnett of Collins; two nieces, Cynthia “Cindy” Fortenberry Shields and her husband, Tommy, of Collins and Susan Fortenberry Ellis and her husband, Richard, of Silver Creek; five great nieces, Laura Beth Bond, Anna Shields, Sara Morgan, Rachel Tyrone and Rikki Broom, and a host of other family members and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gasque Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Mary Helen Richardson, 2453 Warren Town Road, Pulaski, Mississippi, 39152.
