Mattie Jearl Bridges
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 21, 2017 at New Life Fellowship Baptist Church in Monticello for Mrs. Mattie Jearl Overton Bridges, 64, who died Monday, October 16, 2017 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Rev. Amos Bridges, pastor, officiated with interment following in the church cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Mattie Jearl Bridges was born in Lawrence County to the late James Overton and Bessie R. Starks. She joined First Baptist M.B. Church in Monticello. She married Rev. Amos D. Bridges and joined Pearl River Valley M.B. Church. She served as former First Lady of Pearl River Valley M.B. Church, Prentiss First Baptist Church and current First Lady of New Life Fellowship Baptist Church.
She worked at Kellwood manufacturing for over 30 years. She returned to school, attending Copiah-Lincoln Community College. She was employed by Lawrence County School District.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Amos Bridges; children, Eric (Beverly) Bridges, Sr. of Bassfield and Marva (Terrell) Atterberry of Monticello; special daughter, Lashunda Overby of Mendenhall; godson, Ryan Brown of Jackson; five grandchildren, Tyler Thompson, Regan Atterberry, Marcus Atterberry, Macala Atterberry and Eric Bridges, Jr; five sisters, Diane (Jim) Hill of Gardenia, California, Donnie Porter of Mobile, Alabama, Shirley Anderson of Monticello, Mae E. Gibbs of Hazlehurst and Dinah Lewis of Moses Lake, Washington; three brothers, Stanley Starks and Kenneth (Andria) Starks, both of Monticello and Wayne (Deborah) Starks of Silver Creek and many other relatives and friends.
