Dorthalia S. Sutton

Dorthalia S. Sutton, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at Crystal Health and Rehab in Greenwood. She was a member of New Bethel M.B. Church in Itta Bena. A visitation and Ivy Beyond the Wall service were held at New Bethel M.B. Church on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Services were held Friday, September 29, on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University in the auditorium with Rev. Dexter Sutton officiating and Saturday, September 30 at New Life Fellowship Baptist Church in Monticello. Burial followed the services on September 30 in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Monticello. Sanders & Sanders Funeral Home of Greenwood was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Sutton obtained her primary and secondary education in Lawrence County Public School System. She graduated from Jackson State University with a degree in Elementary Education and later received a Master’s degree in Education from Delta State University. She taught in the Humphrey’s County School System and the Leflore and Greenwood Public School System. She is the sister-in-law of the former president of Mississippi Valley State University, Dr. William Sutton. She was a charter member of Kappa Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Itta Bena. She has been a member of the AKA’s for over 47 years and she was known by the members of Zeta Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Inc. on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University as “Big Momma”.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Sutton Sr.
Survivors include three daughters, Dr. Millicent Sutton of White Plains, New York, Dr. Elaine Sutton Robertson of Crofton, Maryland and Mable Sutton of Denver, Colorado; four sons, Dr. Lawrence Sutton Jr. of Vicksburg, Dr. Dwayne Sutton of Clinton, Rev. Dexter Sutton ESQ of Laurel, Maryland and Santiago Sutton of Itta Bena and sister, Elizabeth Stewart of Walker, Louisiana. She had 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
